LANGUAGE AS A TOOL
Language is without a doubt the most powerful and the most essential tool for a full integration of a refugee in the host country. Not only because it determines their ability to function daily in the society in a useful way, but also because it transmits the way to understand the world in their new environment.
The first and most important obstacle that a migrant or refugee faces in the host country is the language barrier. The academic qualifications, work experience or even the good will, do not matter if they are not able to overcome that barrier with a minimum level of competence, and they then will be doomed to marginalization due to the lack of possibilities to access quality jobs or basic services.
The academic qualifications, work experience or even the good will, do not matter if they are not able to overcome the language barrierIt is necessary to set an integration system focused on teaching the language efficiently, with a structured and accelerated method, in order for them to be self-sufficient and functional as soon as possible and in this way reduce the risk of social exclusion which is sadly, their starting point. It is also necessary to guide them in in how this new society where they have arrived functions, for them to be able to cover their basic needs such as finding a doctor and the necessary administrative formalities.
That is why language teaching for migrants and refugees must be accompanied by a fair amount of social work that focuses on the specific cases with a responsible cultural sensitivity treating the differences in order to lessen the impact of changing county.
